Sclerotherapy

Treat Spider, Varicose & Reticular Veins (Please note that large, bulging veins may need to be treated by a specialist upon our recommendation.)

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment to address visible veins in the legs that may be unsightly. There are various types of aesthetic vein treatment depending on the severity of the veinous issue. Large, bulging veins (varicose) that are feeding smaller green veins and spider veins require interventional treatments such as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy of endovenous laser ablation. For treatment of varicose veins of this nature we recommend contacting a vascular surgical clinic such as KW Vein Clinic. If you have contraindications to treatment or evidence of venous reflux it is also recommended to attend a vascular surgeon.

Smaller veins that are below the skin surface and green in colour (reticular veins) and smaller spider veins can be treated with less interventional sclerotherapy.  ArtMed offers treatment of reticular and spider veins in the upper and lower leg (above the ankle).  Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosing agent (type of soap called Tromboject) into the vein.  This irritates the vein and when compressed it ‘sticks together’ thereby shutting down the vessel and shunting blood into deeper vessels.  Compression of the vein immediately after treatment is critical and this involves the application of cotton balls and medical grade compression stockings (which can be purchased through ArtMed as well).  Typically, 4 to 8 treatments are required depending on the severity of the condition.

If you’re interested in sclerotherapy contact ArtMed and we will send you a a pre-screening form to determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment of your reticular and spider veins.

Compression wear:

At ArtMed, we carry both Sigvaris and Achi brand compression wear in sport and medical grades. Compression wear comes in many colours and styles so it’s easy to find something to suits your needs. Wearing compression also improves venous return to the heart so you’ll feel better when you wear it.  Wearing compression when travelling improves circulation, reduces risk of blood clots and helps reduce jet lag.
